Cause
– A zoonotic virus transmitted mainly from fruit bats to humans, sometimes via animals (e.g., pigs)
Regions
– South and Southeast Asia
Symptoms
– Early: fever, headache, muscle pain
– Severe: encephalitis (brain inflammation), confusion, seizures
Fatality Rate
– Approximately 40 – 75%
Vaccine/ Treatment
– No approved vaccine or specific treatment (supportive care only)
Prevention
– Avoid contact with fruit bats
– Do not eat fruit that may have been bitten by bats
– Avoid raw date palm sap
– Avoid close contact with sick animals
– Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms appear
If you experience fever, headache, muscle pain, confusion, seizures, or loss of consciousness, you must report immediately, avoid contact with others, and seek medical attention at a hospital.
